Concrete Material Estimating: Slabs, Footings, Steps, and Bags

Concrete quantity is a volume problem, but real projects rarely have one simple shape. Break the pour into slabs, footings, steps, curbs, or post-hole rings, calculate each net volume, then choose the purchase method.

Use the calculator that matches the shape

A rectangular slab uses length × width × thickness. A continuous footing uses run length × footing width × footing depth. Steps are a series of rectangular prisms, while a post hole with a post inside is an outer cylinder minus the post displacement. Combining these into one average rectangle can create a large error.

Measure each distinct pour section and calculate it separately. Add the net volumes only after each shape is correct. Keep thickened edges, grade beams, landings, and irregular transitions separate unless the drawings give a reliable combined volume.

Convert all thicknesses to one unit

In US customary units, convert inches to feet before multiplying. A 4-inch slab is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 feet thick. After calculating cubic feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Keep full precision through the calculation and round only the displayed result or purchase unit.

For cylindrical holes, use π × radius² × depth. Radius is half the diameter. If a post occupies the center, subtract its circular or square cross-section before multiplying by the concrete-filled depth and number of holes.

Ready-mix volume and bag count are different decisions

Ready-mix is commonly ordered by cubic yard. Bagged mix is purchased by package count, using the finished yield printed on the bag or technical sheet. Bag weight alone does not tell you finished concrete volume.

Compare the order quantity—not only the net volume—with delivery minimums, site access, mixing capacity, working time, and the ability to place the concrete continuously. Treat waste as a visible allowance

Excavation variation, form movement, subgrade irregularity, spillage, and residual material can increase the order. Add one editable allowance after the net geometry. Do not change the measured dimensions just to hide extra volume inside the geometry.

For bags, divide the order volume by finished yield and round up to a whole bag. For ready-mix, use the supplier’s order increments and project guidance. A calculator result is a takeoff, not a structural or code decision.
