How this calculator works

Gross wall area is reduced by the rectangular opening area you enter. Net face area is divided by the nominal brick module—the actual face plus head and bed joints.

Using a nominal module prevents the joint from being added twice. The calculator then applies waste once to the unrounded brick equivalent and rounds up. Supplier cube or pack count is an editable purchase view.

Bond, corners, row closures, sills, lintels, arches, cuts, breakage patterns, and special shapes require the actual wall layout. Enter known specials separately instead of asking an area formula to invent them.

Control example: modular brick face

A nominal 8 × 2⅝ in module covers 21 in². Divide net wall area in square inches by that module.

Apply waste to the unrounded equivalent, then round once to a whole regular brick.

Assumptions and limits

  • Wall and openings are face-area measurements.
  • Module dimensions include the intended joints once.
  • Waste covers ordinary cuts and breakage only.
  • This is not an exact bond, structural, or code takeoff.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Adding mortar-joint width to nominal module dimensions.
  • Using brick body area without any joint module.
  • Treating openings as proof that no jamb, sill, arch, or special units are needed.

They should. Enter an actual face plus joint once, or the nominal module directly—never both.

Does this create a bond layout?

No. It is a face-area quantity estimate and does not place rows, headers, corners, or cuts.
