How this calculator works
This gravel quantity calculator multiplies project length, width, and average installed depth to find net cubic feet. It also converts that volume to cubic yards, the unit commonly used for a bulk gravel order in the United States.
The extra-material percentage is applied once to net volume. Estimated weight then uses the loose bulk density you enter. Gravel tonnage is shown in 2,000 lb US short tons; it is not a metric tonne and it is not inferred from stone size alone.
The default 90 lb/ft³ density is only a transparent reference derived from one retail product listing 45 lb for 0.5 ft³. Crushed gravel, washed gravel, moisture, compaction, grading, and void space can change bulk density. Set density to zero for a volume-only result or replace it with the selected supplier’s value.

Assumptions and limits

- A ton means a 2,000 lb US short ton; delivery increments are set by the supplier.
Common measuring mistakes
- Using compacted density for a loose truck order without checking the supplier.
- Entering inches of depth as feet.
- Adding waste to dimensions and then applying the percentage again.
- Treating pea gravel, decorative rock, and compacted paver base as interchangeable materials.

How do I calculate how much gravel I need?
Multiply length by width by average depth in feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards, then add one explicit order allowance.
How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?
There is no single conversion. Multiply 27 ft³ by the bulk density for the same gravel and material condition, then divide pounds by 2,000.
What depth should I enter?

Can I calculate gravel without knowing density?
Yes. Set density to zero and use the cubic-yard result. Weight and mass-based bag estimates require a supplier density.
Is this the same as a pea gravel calculator?
The geometry is related, but generic gravel can have different grading, density, compaction, and use. Use the material-specific page when its assumptions better match the job.
