Landscape Fabric Calculator
Lay out real fabric strips with seams and edge allowance—not just bed area divided by roll coverage.
- Parallel strips

- Total fabric length

The strip plan includes side overlap and edge allowance. Confirm seam direction, pins/staples, slopes, cuts, and fastening interval with the fabric instructions.
Show calculation
ceil((12 ft + edges) ÷ (4 ft − 6 in)) = 4 strips; ceil(164 ÷ 50) = 4 rollsTransparent method and editable product assumptions. Verify current labels and project requirements.

How this calculator works
Side overlap reduces the effective width contributed by each roll strip. The bed width plus both edge allowances is divided by that effective strip width.
Every strip includes end allowance, then total linear footage is rounded to whole rolls. Staple planning uses strip edges and seams as an auditable length estimate.
Slopes, wind, soil, cuts around plants and product instructions may require more overlap and fasteners than a simple rectangle.
Formula
Strips = ceil[(bed width + edges) ÷ (roll width − overlap)]; rolls = ceil(strips × strip length ÷ roll length)The live result shows fabric length and a planning staple count.Control example: 40 × 12 ft bed
A 4 ft roll with 6 in side overlap contributes 3.5 ft per strip; 6 in edge allowances are included.
The calculator needs 4 parallel strips and rounds their total length to whole 50 ft rolls.
Assumptions and limits
- Measure the bed, check actual roll dimensions, and use the selected fabric’s overlap, burial and fastening instructions for site conditions.
- Measurements describe one simple project geometry.
- Waste and package values are editable planning assumptions.
- It does not map irregular beds, optimize offcuts, specify soil preparation, guarantee weed control, or replace product installation guidance.
Common measuring mistakes
- Mixing nominal dimensions with actual installed coverage.
- Skipping whole-package or stock-length rounding.
- Failing to verify the page’s stated measurement and product assumptions.
- Using a planning estimate outside the limitations stated on this page.

Questions people ask
What does the Landscape Fabric Calculator calculate?
Calculate landscape fabric rolls, parallel strip count, overlap, edge allowance, fabric area, and planning staples for a rectangular bed.
How does this landscape fabric calculator work?
Strips = ceil[(bed width + edges) ÷ (roll width − overlap)]; rolls = ceil(strips × strip length ÷ roll length)
Which measurements should I enter?
Measure the bed, check actual roll dimensions, and use the selected fabric’s overlap, burial and fastening instructions for site conditions.
Does the estimate include every project requirement?
No. It does not map irregular beds, optimize offcuts, specify soil preparation, guarantee weed control, or replace product installation guidance.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Switch to Metric above the form. The calculator converts the displayed measurements while keeping the same geometry and whole-item rounding.
