How this calculator works
This drywall sheet calculator multiplies total wall run by a shared wall height, subtracts large wall openings, and adds any ceiling area. Multiple layers are applied before the cutting allowance.
Order area is divided by the physical drywall sheet area. A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 ft², a 4 × 10 sheet covers 40 ft², and a 4 × 12 sheet covers 48 ft² before cuts. USG product data lists 4 ft widths and multiple lengths; enter the size actually available for the project.
The result is an area-based drywall quantity, not a panel placement plan. Horizontal or vertical installation, seam staggering, framing layout, fire-rated assemblies, ceiling orientation, offcut reuse, damaged sheets, and long-wall optimization can change the purchase count.

Gross wall area is 240 ft². Subtract 32 ft² of large openings to get 208 ft².
With 10% cutting allowance, the order area is 228.8 ft². Divide by 32 ft² per 4 × 8 sheet and round up to 8 sheets.

- All wall faces entered share one height.
- Opening area applies only to walls, not the ceiling.
- Every layer covers the full net surface area.
- Sheet dimensions are physical dimensions for the selected product.
Common measuring mistakes
- Using floor area instead of wall surface area.
- Subtracting every small outlet or penetration as saved material.
- Forgetting a second drywall layer in a rated assembly.

Should I subtract doors and windows?
Subtract large openings when they materially reduce full-sheet use. Small cutouts usually do not save a purchasable sheet.
Does this include ceiling drywall?
