How this calculator works

The calculator first finds gross wall area, then subtracts the total face area of the doors and windows you enter.

The net wall area is divided by the nominal face module. A 16 × 8 inch CMU module covers 128 square inches, or 0.8889 square feet. Nominal dimensions already include a typical 3/8-inch joint, so the joint must not be added again.

Waste is applied once to the unrounded regular-unit equivalent. The result then rounds up to a whole block. Pallets are a purchase view based on your editable supplier pack size; special corner, half, bond-beam, and lintel units remain a separate manual quantity.

Regular blocks = ceil[(wall area − opening area) ÷ nominal block face × (1 + waste)]The live substitution appears with your result.

Control example: 16 × 8 ft wall

A 128 ft² wall divided by a nominal 16 × 8 in module gives 144 block equivalents.

With 5% waste: ceil(144 × 1.05) = 152 regular blocks.

Assumptions and limits

  • Wall and opening dimensions describe the face area only.
  • Nominal block dimensions include the mortar joint.
  • Openings do not determine lintels, reinforcement, bond, cuts, or special units.
  • Pallet size is an editable supplier value, not a universal package count.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Adding a 3/8-inch joint to a nominal 16 × 8-inch module.
  • Applying waste to both regular blocks and installed units used later in a mortar calculation.
  • Treating this area estimate as an exact coursing or structural plan.
