How this calculator works
The purchase estimate multiplies tiled area by one editable grout allowance, divides by the selected product’s coverage for the actual tile and joint geometry, and rounds up to a whole bag. Coverage and bag weight must come from the same product.
The reference joint volume estimates the share of a repeating rectangular tile module occupied by joints, then multiplies that fraction by area and filled joint depth. It is a geometry check only; it does not convert directly to bags without the mixed product density and application behavior.
MAPEI notes that grout estimates depend on tile length, width, thickness, joint width, area, and product density, while roughness, residual product, irregular surfaces, job conditions, and application methods can change real consumption. Keep the label value editable and avoid a universal density preset.

A 10% allowance raises the covered area to 220 ft².
At 50 ft² per 25 lb bag, 220 ÷ 50 = 4.4, so buy 5 bags. The 12 × 24 in tile and ⅛ in joint fields provide a separate volume cross-check.
Assumptions and limits
- Tiles form a regular rectangular grid.
- Coverage matches the selected product and entered joint geometry.
- Filled depth describes the grout actually occupying the joint.
- Allowance is applied once before whole-bag rounding.
Common measuring mistakes
- Using masonry mortar or polymeric paver sand coverage for tile grout.
- Treating full tile thickness as filled joint depth without checking the installation.
- Mixing coverage from one product with the bag weight of another.
- Converting geometric joint volume to weight with an unrelated generic density.

How much grout do I need?
Use the selected product’s coverage for your tile and joint dimensions, add one allowance, divide by coverage per bag, and round up.
Do larger tiles use less grout?
Usually they create less joint length per square foot, but joint width, filled depth, layout, and product density also matter.
Should grout depth equal tile thickness?
Not automatically. Enter the depth actually filled with grout for the specified installation.
Can I convert joint volume directly to bags?
Only with verified mixed-product density and application assumptions. This page uses published coverage for purchasing and volume as a cross-check.
Is tile grout the same as mortar or polymeric sand?
No. Tile grout fills tile joints; thinset or mortar bonds tile; polymeric sand fills exterior paver joints. Their coverage is not interchangeable.
