How this calculator works

Use the current coverage range published for the exact product, paver type, joint width, and joint depth. The calculator divides area plus any explicit allowance by both ends of that range and rounds each result up.

A 65–85 ft² range does not become a precise 75 ft² estimate. Keeping both endpoints shows the order uncertainty that the manufacturer intentionally reports.

The reference joint volume uses a repeating rectangular grid: joint fraction = 1 − paver face area ÷ module area. It is a geometry check only. Chamfers, false joints, field boundaries, irregular stone, and product compaction are not modeled, and generic sand density is not used to convert it to bags.

Control example: 200 ft²

For coverage of 65–85 ft² per 50 lb bag, divide 200 by both endpoints.

ceil(200 ÷ 85) to ceil(200 ÷ 65) = 3–4 bags.

Assumptions and limits

  • Manufacturer coverage matches the product and field conditions.
  • Pavers repeat in a rectangular grid for the geometry cross-check.
  • Actual joint width and filled depth are used.
  • Coverage already accounts for its stated joint conditions and is not multiplied by depth again.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Using the midpoint of a coverage range as exact.
  • Treating bedding sand as joint sand.
  • Multiplying direct manufacturer coverage again by joint depth or width.

Why is the result a range?

Published coverage varies with paver and joint conditions. Preserving the range is more honest than inventing an exact midpoint.

Can I use regular sand density?

No. Product bag coverage, compaction, gradation, and binder behavior are not represented by generic sand density.
