How this calculator works

Enter the actual installed gypsum-panel area that will receive joint finishing. The calculator multiplies that area by an editable product consumption rate expressed in gallons per 1,000 square feet.

The published USG Midweight example is approximately 9.4 gallons per 1,000 square feet for joint finishing. That figure describes the complete stated work, so the calculator does not multiply it again by the number of tape or finish passes.

Waste is applied once to the calculated compound volume. The final purchase count rounds up by the container size you enter and shows the excess created by whole-container packaging. Skim coats and textures need their own published coverage, thickness, and yield; they are not a hidden multiplier here.

Control example: 1,000 ft² of panels

At 9.4 gal per 1,000 ft², the net estimate is 9.4 gal.

With 4.5 gal pails and no added waste: ceil(9.4 ÷ 4.5) = 3 pails.

Assumptions and limits

  • Panel area is the installed drywall surface, not floor area.
  • Consumption matches the exact compound and finish scope.
  • Ready-mix gallons are not inferred from dry-powder bag weight.
  • Corners, dense joints, and technique variation are handled only through an explicit allowance.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Multiplying a manufacturer’s total joint-finishing coverage by three because the job uses several passes.
  • Using ordinary joint coverage for a Level 5 skim coat or spray texture.
  • Rounding gallons before dividing by container size.

Questions people ask

Should I multiply by the number of coats?

No, not when the published figure is total consumption for joint finishing. Only use a per-coat multiplier when the source explicitly gives a per-coat rate.

Can this estimate skim-coat compound?

Only if you replace the coverage with a verified skim-coat rate for the chosen thickness and product. Joint-finishing coverage is not interchangeable.

Why are whole pails rounded up?

A fractional requirement cannot be bought as a sealed container. The result keeps the unrounded gallons visible and shows the resulting excess.
