How this calculator works

Measure the length and sloped width of each roof plane. The repeated-plane fields handle a simple symmetrical roof; add dormers or unequal planes through the additional sloped-area field after measuring them separately.

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. The calculator applies the entered waste factor to measured sloped area, shows the resulting squares, divides by the selected shingle’s published coverage per bundle, and rounds up to whole bundles.

Many standard asphalt shingles use about three bundles per square, but heavier products and specific package configurations differ. GAF documentation includes both three-bundle and four-bundle products and a Timberline package covering 98.4 ft² with three bundles, so the editable label value—not a generic shortcut—controls the result.

Control example: two 40 × 30 ft roof planes

Two sloped planes contain 2,400 ft², or 24 roofing squares before waste.

With 10% waste the order area is 2,640 ft². At 33.333 ft² per bundle, round 79.2 up to 80 bundles.

Assumptions and limits

  • Plane width is measured along the slope.
  • Repeated planes have identical dimensions.
  • Bundle coverage matches the exact product and current packaging.
  • Waste is applied once to field shingles only.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Using horizontal building footprint as finished roof surface area.
  • Assuming every shingle product contains exactly three bundles per square.
  • Mixing field-shingle coverage with starter or ridge-cap packaging.
  • Ignoring valleys, hips, rakes, dormers, and product-specific trim allowances.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Measure total sloped roof area, add the appropriate trim allowance, divide by the selected product’s coverage per bundle, and round up.

How many bundles are in a square of shingles?

Three is common for standard asphalt shingles, but products vary. Check the package or manufacturer data sheet and enter its actual coverage.

Should I use roof footprint or sloped area?

Use the actual sloped plane area. If you only know horizontal projection, first use verified roof geometry to convert it.

Does this include ridge cap and starter shingles?

No. Field shingles, starter strips, ridge cap, underlayment, ice barrier, flashing, and ventilation are distinct product takeoffs.
